Frank Sardoni’s victory in the 2016 Madden Challenge tournament inflated his wallet and his standing in the growing American eSports industry.
The 25-year-old IT worker and lifelong New Jersey resident took home $20,000 for his victory over Eric “Problem” Wright, arguably the greatest tournament player in competitive Madden history, at EA Sports’ E3 event in Los Angeles June 14. Sardoni, a relative newcomer to the Madden live event scene, took down Wright 37-21 after defeating current Madden Challenge champion Zack “Serious Moe” Lane in the quarterfinals.
EA just announced that there will be $1,000,000 in prizes handed out in next year’s Madden Challenge. This is the most that has been offered since the glory days of the Playstation 2 era’s 32-city touring Madden Challenge in the early 2000s.
Sardoni, or “Stiff” as he’s know in the Madden community, spoke with me about what it takes to become an eSports competitor, where he sees the eSports climate heading in America, and the possible daily fantasy-esque potential of online betting in gaming.
